G Scale Model Trains
G scale model trains (also called large scale trains) are big or near life-size train models often used for outdoors, particularly the garden railways.
In Europe especially Germany and the UK, G scale model trains are associated with the trademark Lehman Gross Bahn (which means Big Train), manufactured by the company Lehman Patentwerk. The most sough-after and expensive G scale train models were those made by this firm in 1968.
In the UK, the G scale model trains measure 1:22:5 with the standard 45-millimeter (or 1.75 inches) gauge. This is slightly different from the American G scale, which uses the 1:20.3 scale proportions.
But in both countries, the popularity of the G scale model trains is unquestionable. Its best features include the big size, durability and added value to the play experience of the hobbyist, either a grown-up or a child.
G scale model trains are also called garden trains, and because of their size, these trains go well with excellent add-ons or accessories in the railway layouts. These include life-like scenes like railway workers, countryside farms with animals and natural formations like rocky mountains.
The most expensive G scale model trains today are brass locomotives marked Lehman Patentwerk. Today, modern G scale train models use aluminum for the train tracks which are more resistant to oxidation compared to stainless steel.
